Georgia Harkness wrote the hymn "Hope of the world" for the 1954 World Council of Churches which was held in Evanston, Illinois. Their theme was “Jesus Christ – the Hope of the World” and her hymn text addresses how Christ lived and how he might live in our lives today. The text was later paired with a tune by Vicar Earle Copes - the basis of these variations.
